Focus of Practice
& Interests
I am deliberately avoiding specialization in my
practice. I find that
specialization is generally over-rated and presumes too much about a
person’s concerns. Often,
presumptions are the very cause of the suffering which brings people
to therapy. There are
solutions and possibilities which lie outside the way in which we
usually think. Invention,
creation, discovery, and courageous assertion, I find, are the ways
to liberate ourselves from the ties which have bound and troubled
us. These are the keys
to overcoming the obstacles which have blocked our vision and our
paths. Taking
responsibility for one’s own life is at once the hard and easy
way.
Background &
Experience
Since 1979, I have worked in
state and community psychiatric hospitals, mental health outpatient
clinics, and in private practice.
I have lead crisis services, headed up programs for Dialectical Behavior
Therapy (DBT), and supervised the internships of counselors in training.
My professionally published material has been cited in journals
internationally and in presentation to the United States Congress.

Orientation &
Approach
| My approach
to therapy is to “forget everything you ever thought you knew about
psychology.” The people who
come to see me are not statistics.
They are individuals and deserve individual attention and
independent consideration. I
take a constructivist and object relations approach to treatment in
an effort to creatively restore the relationship between peaceable
social living and the sustainable integrity of the individual.
Toward this, I employ a variety of established
psychotherapeutic techniques and draw from philosophy, sociology,
politics, anthropology, mythology, history, spirituality, art,
literature, science, conventional wisdom, and even popular culture.
My style reflects the faith I have in those who seek my
assistance.

Personal Comments
|
Living
well and meaningfully is a life-long endeavor for the conscientious
person. Formal therapy
is but assistance one receives along the road.
Although there are many I have seen for long periods of time,
and many I expect to work with for even longer periods, there are
still many with whom I am only acquainted for a brief period.
It is my aim and my wish to help people create and discover
“tools and jewels” they can take with them when they go.
It is my wish that they find and join with fellow travelers
and that they live joyful and shared lives free of hopelessness and
fear. It is a great
privilege to do the work I do and to have seen the courage and
vulnerability of those who have sat with me in good faith and with a
humble heart. Life is a
powerful and precious thing.
