Choose the ethical alternative. Join AMHA-Oregon

An Open Letter to all Licensed Mental Health Professionals in Oregon

Dear Colleagues:

Managed Care in Oregon restricts which professional a patient can see and limits the number of professionals who can provide treatment.  Managed care requires professionals to accept company policies that limit care and requires disclosure of clients' personal information.

Membership in AMHA-Oregon is open to all licensed and qualified mental health professionals. AMHA members care about the ethical practice of mental health and choose to participate in this non-profit alternative to for-profit managed care.

The AMHA Focus

  • Consumer Choice

  • Consumer Protection

  • Confidentiality/Privacy

  • Competent Practice

AMHA History

The national AMHA concept began to be developed in 1995.  Oregon is one of 13 states organizing a chapter of the American Mental Health Alliance-USA.  Volunteer organizers at AMHA-USA have a ten year goal.

  • Replace for-profit management of professionals' services with member owned cooperatives which provide non-profit organization and delivery of professional services.

Every responsible mental health professional has experienced intrusive micromanagement of managed care.  They are tired of it and want alternatives.  AMHA is the developing alternative.

AMHA-Oregon's Future

Becoming a member of AMHA will provide you with immediate benefits.

  • We are involved in developing a state-of-the-art Web site at http://www.oregoncounseling.org/.  The internet is already changing when, how and why consumers seek mental health services.

  • With a sufficient number of qualified members and the infrastructure to operate as a contracting entity, AMHA-Oregon will be attractive to Employee Benefits brokers and other group coverage purchasers.

  • Membership in AMHA-Oregon will help you develop a sense of community and shared purpose with colleagues who value their patients' privacy, with colleagues who resist the "industrialization" of professional services, with colleagues who value the human enterprise of caring.

  • AMHA-Oregon will develop contracts which maintain these Irreducible Principals:  that an individual has the right to choose his or her own therapist; that the client and therapist shall determine the course of therapy; that therapists shall preserve client confidentiality; that reimbursement methods should support ethical practice; that mental health professionals should practice in an interdisciplinary community which promotes competent and ethical practice

How To Join AMHA-Oregon

Complete the Professional Information Questionnaire.  This is your AMHA-Oregon membership application.  The application form is self explanatory.  After your Professional Information Questionnaire has been approved and your enrollment fee of $600 is paid in full you may want to consider joining the AMHA Oregon Psychotherapists Guild.

Public Information and Marketing

Within AMHA-Oregon we are developing the Oregon Psychotherapists Guild to:

  • provide public information about mental health and mental wellness topics

  • generate self-referrals of well-informed clients making choices among Guild professionals

  • increase public awareness regarding the value of competent mental health services

  • educate the public about selecting appropriate mental health coverage and the frequent necessity (and benefit) of paying out-of-pocket for ethical and competent services.

Membership in the Oregon Psychotherapists Guild will benefit you by increasing public awareness and by developing and organizing marketing strategies to present you and your unique professional capabilities to potential new clients.

Research has found that up to 50% of all mental health services are not covered by mental health insurance and are ultimately paid for by consumers out-of-pocket.
